The US Army in Alaska sent more than 7,200 Airborne and Stryker Brigade soldiers to fight in the war in Iraq. Alaska Guardsmen have been deployed repeatedly. By the fifth anniversary, 109 Alaskan and Alaska-based troops had been killed there. In 2009, the Stryker Brigade redeployed to Afghanistan. This ongoing essay examines the cost of both wars to Alaska’s military men and women and their families.
