Iditarod

The Iditarod, sled dog racing’s most renowned event, takes teams across 1,000 miles of Alaskan wilderness. Mushers coach their teams from checkpoint to checkpoint, over mountain passes, along frozen rivers and through Native Alaskan villages. They cycle through their run and rest schedule, trying not to overdo either one. These photos examine the 2009 and 2012 running of the race.
